Life Trustee: Quattlebaum Land Acquisition 'God's Surprise'

July 31, 2013
The Quattlebaum family's recent decision to sell its property to PBA follows a tradition of support that goes back several decades.

The recent announcement that Palm Beach Atlantic University would acquire the Quattlebaum funeral home property came as a surprise for the timing rather than the event itself that expands the campus footprint.

Founding Chairman of the Board and Life Trustee Dr. Donald E. Warren described the announcement as “God’s surprise” in a letter to family matriarch Mrs. Earl (Phyllis) Quattlebaum.

Recounting the University’s campus master plan for development and noting that a few parcels had not been obtained, Dr. Warren wrote, “I had complete faith we (the University) would get all this property someday but I did not think your property would (become the University’s) in my lifetime and God gave me this magnificent surprise.”

Houston, Texas-based Service Corporation International (SCI) purchased the Quattlebaum Funeral and Cremation Services in July making the long-time family business part of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral providers. At the same time, the Quattlebaum family specifically chose to make it possible for Palm Beach Atlantic University to acquire the approximate one-acre parcel adjacent to the University’s 27-acre West Palm Beach campus rather than include the land in the sale of their business.

The Quattlebaum family’s decision in favor of Palm Beach Atlantic follows a tradition of support that goes back several decades. In this letter, Dr. Warren noted that the Quattlebaum family gave up their family home so that the University could develop additional classroom and residence hall space in the 1990s. Over the years, the Quattlebaum family’s unfailing support of the University’s students has been evident, Dr. Warren noted, though operating a business in the middle of an active college campus was no doubt a challenge at times.

G. Earl Quattlebaum and partners W. Joe Holleman and Aubrey A. Burse founded the company now known as Quattlebaum Funeral and Cremation Services in 1955 and the company quickly became renowned for the quality of its services and its focus on community betterment. Today the company is viewed as one of the leading funeral service providers in Palm Beach County dedicated to the highest levels of professionalism, integrity, fairness and excellence.

The Quattlebaum family members who presently run the company remain in key management positions after the sale. They include siblings Greg Quattlebaum as a general manager; Gary Quattlebaum as a location manager; Gale Q. Schiffman as an office manager; and Phyllis Quattlebaum as an ambassador. The family is working closely with SCI to ensure a smooth transition for the families they serve, and SCI will fulfill all of Quattlebaum customers pre-arranged funeral contracts. The business will continue at the current location through 2013.

Presently, the University is planning for the transition and the board is focused on the property’s future use, according to current Chairman of the Board of Trustees Scott G. Hawkins, Esq.

“Our faith in God’s providence and his timing has brought us to this point in the University’s history,” Hawkins said. “It is amazing to see God’s plan unfold and to witness the faithful example of the Quattlebaum family as neighbors and friends of PBA.”
