Dr. Francisco Plaza, assistant professor of political science at Palm Beach Atlantic University, received an award in Mexico City for his essay, “Political Messianism and Procedural Democracy: Enemies of Liberty.”
The award was presented on Nov. 24 by Grupo Salinas, an institution in Mexico that annually sponsors an essay contest on themes related to the threats against freedom in Latin America.
Dr. Plaza’s essay, along with 12 others, was selected from a pool of more than 600 essays submitted by scholars from throughout the entire hemisphere. Mario Vargas Llosa, the 2011 Nobel Prize winner for literature, delivered the keynote speech and gave out the awards. The event received widespread media coverage throughout Latin America.
