Application Process and Minimum Requirements

Application Instructions:

To apply to the upper division nursing program, you will need:

  1. Admission to Palm Beach Atlantic University (If you are not a current nursing student, please fill out the university admissions form.)
  2. School of Nursing Application Form
  3. Nonrefundable $35 School of Nursing application fee (make checks Payable to PBA with nursing application in the memo).
  4. Three School of Nursing recommendation forms (two academic or professional and one personal)
  5. Unofficial transcripts from all colleges attended including PBA (PBA students can print their unofficial transcripts through myPBA on the student tab.)
  6. Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) (See below for scheduling information)
  7. Essay (Usually completed at the time of the TEAS; see below for topics)
  8. Applicants who applied for a previous year must complete a new application including the application fee.

 

Timeframe for Applications and What to Expect if you are Accepted:

  • The deadline for normal applications is October 1.  If the class is not filled at that time, the Admissions committee will review applications each month until the class is full.
  • If you are accepted, you have two weeks to accept or decline.  You should indicate whether you plan on taking Introduction to Nursing, Health Assessment, and Pathophysiology and Pharmacology I in the Spring semester (January) or Summer (late June).
  • Students must complete their background check, fingerprints, and drug screen by the date indicated in the acceptance letter.
  • All acceptances are provisional on passing the above nursing courses and completing all other outstanding course requirements before gaining full acceptance and beginning clinical courses in the Fall.
  • If you are new to PBA, then you are required to submit a Health History and Physical to Health and Wellness.  If you are currently a PBA student, you must complete a Health History/Vaccination Update Form and inform the School of Nursing as to any changes in your health status.
  • Students should reserve two important dates on their calendar:
    • Mandatory Fall Nursing Student Orientation: August 23, 2013 (Friday before school starts) time to be determined.
    • Mandatory Commitment Ceremony: October 12, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. during Family weekend. (Family and friends are invited.)

Scheduling:
  • TEAS sessions are limited to PBA students.  If you are not currently a PBA student you may register to take the TEAS on ATI's Website.
  • Email Adriane McPheeters
  • Include your full name, student ID number and the session you want to attend
  • Each session is limited to 25 students

Before the test:

  • Study & prepare ahead of time
  • Get a good night’s sleep the night before the test
  • Eat breakfast or lunch the day of the test
  • Go to www.atitesting.com and create a student account. Bring your login information to the test. (If you do not bring the information to the test, you will have to reschedule!)
  • Turn in your Upper Division/ SON Application, $35 fee, and recommendations.

The day of the test:

  • Arrive at the stated time above. Plan on being here for 4 hours. (Oceanview Hall, School of Nursing on the Corner of S Dixie Highway and Pembroke Place, West Palm Beach)
  • You will not be allowed to bring anything into the testing lab; no purses, backpacks, cell phones, PDA, beverages, food, calculators, etc.
  • You will need to show a photo ID and have a credit or debit card to pay for the test.  (Test is paid directly to ATI.)
  • The test fee is $25. You will be prompted to pay by credit card prior to starting the test. Please have a major credit card for payment.
  • You are encouraged to dress in layers as the lab ranges from very warm to very cold. Dress comfortably but stay within the university dress policy.

*GPA is the GPA in required courses, not the overall GPA. This is designed to encourage students to take difficult science classes without fearing that they will hurt their chances of acceptance.

Meeting the minimum requirements is NOT a guarantee of acceptance.

 

Essay

The essay is 200-250 words (one page) and is usually administered as part of the TEAS administration. You will be assigned to write on one of the following topics:

 

  1. Give a candid evaluation of yourself as a person. Please discuss, in order of importance, the personal characteristics or qualities you feel are your strengths, as well as those you feel are your weaknesses.
  2. Discuss your background, attitudes, and interests that have convinced you to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  3. Discuss your perception of the professional nurse’s role in the health care system.
  4. Discuss your expectations for your nursing practice five years after graduation from a B.S.N. program.
