Students to Experience Springtime in London

September 16, 2011

Living and studying abroad for a full semester, up to 20 Palm Beach Atlantic University students will have an opportunity to experience the history and culture of London starting in January.

Applications for PBA's London Semester are due Oct. 1.The London Semester program is the result of a partnership between PBA’s Center for Experiential Learning and Roehampton University, an 8,000-student university located in southwest London.

The 4½-month program is open to PBA students of all majors who will have completed at least 70 credit hours by December of this year. The deadline to apply is October 1.

Students selected for the program will live on campus and take the equivalent of 12 to 18 credit hours from courses in Roehampton’s academic catalogue. Also, Assistant Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies Dr. Kathy Maxwell will teach two courses at Roehampton. An instructor from Veritas, the travel organization that is facilitating the trip, will teach a course as well.

Students also will take an online course on experiential learning abroad that will help them reflect on their experiences, said Dr. Randy Richards, director of the Center for Experiential Learning.

In addition, the semester will include trips throughout Great Britain to such places as Bath, Stonehenge, Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick Castle.

"London is one of the world’s most exciting and multicultural cities," Dr. Maxwell said. "This is a great time to learn about other people and to expand your horizons."

Also, Roehampton University’s location is not far from museums, churches and other religious and cultural sites, she said.

Students will depart on Jan. 6 and return on May 18. Students will be able to apply their financial aid and scholarships to the cost of the trip, which is around $3,500 more than the cost of living on campus for a semester with a full meal plan, according to CEL estimates.

If students are considering the trip, they should apply now, said Dr. Jonathan Grenz, assistant director of the CEL.

"It would be extremely difficult to find another opportunity that provides the same level of academic and cultural enrichment for the value," Dr. Grenz said.

Additional information and applications are available on the Center for Experiential Learning page on myPBA or by sending an email to cel@pba.edu.
