As part of a $5,000 Lighthouse Project grant from BB&T, 15 bank employees and their family members, along with Palm Beach Atlantic University students and employees, recently spent a Saturday morning restoring a playground in the Rosemary Village community of West Palm Beach.

The group laid rubber playground mulch, relined a basketball court, repainted and repaired playground equipment, painted a pavilion, did landscaping and picked up trash to give the playground in West Palm Beach a makeover.

The grant also went toward the purchase of new sports equipment.

The effort included the participation of PBA’s Workship program, the University’s signature community service program.

PBA partners with the Rosemary Village after-school program, operated by Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, to help children and youth with their homework and provide recreational opportunities. PBA also hosts a back-to-school block party, which provides school supplies and family-friendly activities to about 100 families each August.

Between 15 and 20 PBA students consistently serve in the after-school program each week. The after-school program serves 20-35 children each week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

PBA students have been involved with the Rosemary Village after-school program since 2007. During the 2012-2013 school year, University students volunteered more than 600 hours with the program.

“It was a privilege to partner with BB&T in making a significant impact on the Rosemary Village community,” said Kate Magro, assistant director for Workship. “The children of Rosemary Village and the PBA students who tutor them will reap the benefits of their hard work and generous donation for many days to come.”
