Suncoast Teams Prevail in Math, Computer Science Contests

Teams of students from Suncoast High School number-crunched and problem-solved their way to a dual first-place finish at the sixth annual Palm Beach Atlantic University High School Mathematics and Computer Science Competition on Nov. 9.

The event showcased 20 mathematics teams and three computer science teams, 104 students in all, from public and private schools in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

During the mathematics competition, teams competed to solve algebra, trigonometry, statistics and pre-calculus problems. The winning mathematics team from Suncoast High School took home a trophy, and each team member received a Texas Instruments Nspire CAS graphing calculator donated by TI.

The second-, third-, and fourth-place teams received Amazon.com gift cards in the amounts of $50, $35 and $25 respectively. Spanish River High School placed second, Atlantic High placed third and Seminole Ridge High placed fourth.

Teams from Suncoast placed first, second and third in the Computer Science Competition. The first-place team received 32-gigabyte flash drives and the second and third-place teams received iTunes gift cards.

Members of the Palm Beach Atlantic University Mathematics Society and the Computer Science Club participated in the event, along with mathematics and computer science faculty Donna Fowler, Dr. Tom Fowler, Jean Giarrusso, Dr. Marsha Guntharp, Dr. Ken Pembamoto, Dr. Stephen Selby, Jim Swick and School of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Barton Starr.
