Trustee Board Vice Chairman Assumes Florida Bar Presidency

Scott HawkinsPalm Beach Atlantic University Board of Trustees Vice Chairman Scott G. Hawkins, an attorney with the West Palm Beach-based law firm Jones, Foster, Johnston and Stubbs, will be sworn in as president of The Florida Bar on Friday.

Hawkins, of Palm Beach Gardens, has served on the Palm Beach Atlantic’s board of trustees since 1994. In 2003, the University recognized him as a companion medalist during its annual American Free Enterprise Day ceremony.

"Scott Hawkins has served both his profession and Palm Beach Atlantic University’s board of trustees with honor and integrity," PBA Interim President William M.B. Fleming Jr. said. "We know him to be a leader of the highest order who will serve his peers well as president of The Florida Bar."

During his year as president, Hawkins wants to underscore the point with attorneys that practicing law is a privilege. He also is spearheading a commission to review the way the Bar discipline process can be improved.

Hawkins serves as his firm's vice-chair, and he has served as shareholder since 1990. He practices commercial litigation with an emphasis on intellectual property, trade secret disputes, covenants not to compete and real estate litigation.

Hawkins received an undergraduate degree in economics with honors from the University of Florida and earned his law degree from the University of Florida College of Law in 1983. In 1984-85, he was an International Rotary Foundation Scholar at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland where he earned a master's degree in business administration.

He serves on the University of Florida Foundation Board of Directors and is on the Board of Trustees of the University of Florida College of Law, where he chaired the Heritage Leadership program for many years. He is past president of the University of Florida National Alumni Association and the University of Florida College of Law Alumni Council.

Hawkins has served on The Florida Bar’s governing body since 2004. The Bar has more than 90,000 members.
