New students, family members, mentors, faculty and staff of The Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy at Palm Beach Atlantic University attended the annual P1 Peer Mentor Program barbecue at Ocean Reef Park in Riviera Beach on Thursday, sponsored by CVS Pharmacy.

Now in its third year, the P1 Peer Mentor Program matches incoming pharmacy students with current students according to their age, gender, marital status and sometimes where they are from. P1 (first-year) students each receive a mentor, a P2 (second-year) or P3 (third-year) student, who volunteer their time to connect with them the summer prior to the beginning of classes.

P1 student Hayden Collier enjoyed Ocean Reef Park's beach access.
Through interaction, P1s are introduced to PBA, and assisted with their transition to both pharmacy school and the West Palm Beach community.

This year there are over 60 student volunteers serving as P1 Peer Mentors. The program is coordinated each year by a volunteer pharmacy student who is selected from other applicants.  The 2012-2013 P1 Mentor Coordinator is Nikki Chilson (P2). In addition, there are six mentor managers who assist with helping coordinate the mentors. P1 Mentors also participate in the New Pharmacy Student Orientation, Aug. 6-9.

According to Thomas Robertson, assistant dean of students, “The P1 Peer Mentor Program has been a great success in helping our incoming pharmacy class adjust and feel connected to the Gregory School of Pharmacy community.”
