For the sixth time in seven years, students from Gregory School of Pharmacy won the Student Pharmacist Self-Care Challenge Championship, presented by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the Nonprescription Medicines Academy (NMA). The winning team consisted of fourth-year pharmacy students Jessica Pokora, Julie Pauly and Hannah Morris.

The event, which is endowed by Proctor & Gamble, promotes active learning of self-care topics to the participants as well as the audience.

Championships are conducted annually by each state pharmacy association at their annual or mid-year convention, and features teams from the state’s colleges, universities and schools of pharmacy. These teams compete head-to-head in an event similar to a quiz bowl, as they answer questions developed by the NMA, which are focused on self care.

Also during the FPA convention, fourth-year student Sarah Reeg received first place in the patient counseling competition and third-year student Nicholas Palm received third place in the poster competition.

Several faculty members of the Gregory School of Pharmacy served as presenters during the conference. They were:

•   Dr. Marile Santamarina, “Tools for Healthy Living with Diabetes.”

•   Dr. Dana Brown, “The Role of Biologics in the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis: Assessing the Current Paradigm of Care.” Brown also presented the keynote address during the Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International Prayer Breakfast: “Lessons Learned from Jesus M.D.”

•   Dr. Angela Clauson, “The Secret of My Success: How to Produce a Killer CV and a Knock 'Em Dead Interview.” Clauson also led a presentation titled “Empowering Superstar Teams.”

•   Clauson and Dr. Erin Dorval additionally served on a panel of judges for the NASPA/NMA Student Pharmacist Self-Care Challenge Championship.
