More than 600 Conniston Community Middle School students and their family members enjoyed an evening of food, physical activity and, above all, learning, during the school’s annual FCAT Family Night on Thursday.

For the second year, Palm Beach Atlantic University assisted Conniston, a neighbor of PBA’s Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Athletic Campus, with FCAT Family Night. A dinner of pasta, salad and dessert was prepared by Aramark, the University’s food service provider, and served by 10 PBA student volunteers.

While students participated in basketball and other games led by about 20 PBA student-athletes, parents were able to find out more about the ongoing PBA Center for Integrative Science Learning activities at Conniston.

The Center for Integrative Science Learning at PBA is funded by a grant from the Quantum Foundation. It includes faculty who are former K-12 teachers and administrators and professors with terminal degrees in education, mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry. They are working closely with Conniston Principal Oscar Otero and educators at the school to help students excel in science.

Also during the evening, the school’s chorus and band performed, and students were able to take part in face-painting, a Nintendo Wii competition, karaoke and academic games. Students who made learning gains during last year’s FCAT were recognized, and department leaders shared important information with parents related to the FCAT.
