Palm Beach Atlantic University senior and U.S. Army veteran Michael Fritz says he owes a great deal to his former weight training coach at Fort Pierce Central High School.

“Before that, I wasn’t very physically active,” said Fritz, who now is majoring in physical education and whose career goal is to be a high school physical educator and strength and conditioning coach.

Recently Fritz became one of two University students who received special recognition during the Florida Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance and Sport annual fall conference in Orlando.

Fritz, a senior majoring in physical education, has been named the statewide Student of the Year. A West Palm Beach resident, Fritz served in the Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was part of the troop surge in Iraq from 2007-2008. He now serves as vice president and co-founder of the Student Veterans of PBA.

His GPA has qualified him for the Provost’s List every semester. He has served as a student representative for the Teacher Education Committee, and he also is a recipient of the Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Ribbon with Campaign Star, National Defense Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and several other awards.

Also recognized at the FAHPERDS conference was Audrey Chausse, a senior majoring in physical education with a concentration in exercise science. She was selected for the Katherine W. Montgomery Scholarship.

Chausse, of Narragansett, R.I., said she considered the scholarship to be a major blessing. She hopes to work with childen someday. “I have a passion for children and their excellence and their health,” she said.

Both Chausse and Fritz were nominated by their professors. A committee selected the award recipients.
