County Commissioner to Receive Distinguished Alumnus Award

November 13, 2013

Broward County Commissioner Martin Kiar, who previously served for six years in the Florida House of Representatives, says he attributes many of his achievements to the educational foundation that Palm Beach Atlantic University laid for him.

Broward County Commissioner Martin Kiar, a 1999 graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic University, will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award during a Homecoming dinner and alumni awards presentation at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Weyenberg Center in the Lassiter Student Center. PBA is a private, Christ-centered college in West Palm Beach, Fla., USA.

A former Sailfish baseball player, Kiar majored in political science and minored in history. He graduated from PBA 1999.
PBA inspired Kiar “to work hard academically and to pursue a life geared at making a difference,” he said.

Kiar will be recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Award during a Homecoming dinner and alumni awards presentation at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Weyenberg Center in the Lassiter Student Center. The event is one of the highlights of Homecoming, which kicks off today. For information, visit www.pba.edu/homecoming.

After graduating from PBA, Kiar earned his Juris Doctorate from Nova Southeastern University. He graduated from Nova with honors and was No.  8 out of 221 students. He also served as an articles editor on the Nova Southeastern University Law Review.

In 2006, Kiar was elected to serve in the Florida House of Representatives. He was re-elected in 2008 and again in 2010. While serving in the Legislature, Kiar focused heavily on budgetary issues and on educational issues. He also was a strong advocate and proponent for the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida, of which PBA is a member.

Kiar also strongly advocated for the Florida Resident Access Grant, which helps provide many students at PBA and throughout Florida with the resources needed to receive a higher education.

In 2012, Kiar was elected to serve on the Broward County Commission. He was the first person in Broward County’s history to win an open (no incumbent running) Broward County Commission seat unopposed. Kiar is also one of the youngest Broward County Commissioners ever to serve in that capacity.

His district, District 1, encompasses parts of Davie, Weston, Sunrise, Plantation, Lauderhill and Tamarac. Kiar said he loves serving on the County Commission because it gives him a unique opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of the 1.8 million people who call Broward County home.

Kiar lives in Davie with his wife Kelly, his daughters Brianne and Camryn, ages 4 and 1, and their puppy, Cooper.
