Professor Replicates, Records Post-Civil War-Era Band Music

July 29, 2014

Dr. Michael O'Connor, associate professor of musicology at Palm Beach Atlantic University, recently spent a week coordinating and performing on a recording of the late 19th-century wind band music of Thomas Coates with Newberry's Victorian Cornet Band.

O'Connor prepared all the music from original printed parts and manuscripts from private collections. Coates was one of the most well-known American composers of band music between 1850 and his death in 1895.

Like the work of other composers of the post-Civil-War era, his music fell into obscurity after John Philip Sousa began touring in the early 1890s.

The Newberry Band is a professional ensemble, founded by O'Connor to perform this music using only instruments built in the late 19th century in order to recreate the sound of that era. The project is part of O’Connor's ongoing research into Coates’ music and was funded by a generous grant from the Rinker Music Faculty Development Fund.

The resulting CD is expected to be released early next year.
