Christival Speaker Shares Gospel Message of Forgiveness

September 19, 2012

Christians struggling with sin in an imperfect world are not unlike goldfish trying to survive in unsuitable aquatic conditions, Dr. Malcolm Gill told students at Palm Beach Atlantic University this week.

“We wrestle with frustration and we wrestle with sin, and like goldfish in a tank we bang our heads thinking this is just not working,” said Dr. Gill, a faculty member at Sydney Missionary and Bible College in Australia and this week’s Christival speaker.

Christival, a long-standing PBA tradition of praise, worship and learning, began on Tuesday evening and continues through Thursday in the Rubin Arena. This year’s Christival theme is G3 — Great God, Great Gospel, Great Commission.

On Wednesday morning, Dr. Gill addressed the topic Great Gospel by exploring the good news in 2 Corinthians 5:21: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Even when we ruin things in our lives, “God is the one who initiates the act of deliverance,” Dr. Gill said. “He is the one who removes us, changes our environment and provides a way for us to have a relationship with Him once again.”

Still, our natural instinct is to run from God, he said. As He did with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, God sees our pitiful attempts to cover our shame and nakedness and He makes provisions for us, Dr. Gill said.

“God is the initiator of forgiveness. We’ve wrecked things. We bring nothing to the table with God. We come empty-handed,” he said.

And yet, the New Testament promise is that those secret shames in our lives have been done away with at the cross through Jesus Christ, he said.

“Today rejoice in song, rejoice in word, rejoice in thought and thank the master that He has freed you,” he said. “Whoever is free in Christ is truly free indeed.”

Dr. Gill will speak again at 8 p.m. today and at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday. Christival is open to the entire PBA family. Leading worship this week is Jay Boykin and the Christ Fellowship Band.
