MacArthur Scholarship Aids 9 Adults Returning to Classroom

October 26, 2011

Nine adult students pursuing bachelor's degrees from Palm Beach Atlantic University's Catherine T. MacArthur School of Leadership are the latest recipients of a scholarship named for Mrs. MacArthur and funded by John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The scholarship program commemorates Mrs. MacArthur's 100th birthday.

Scholarship recipients entering the Organizational Management (bachelor of science) degree program are Martin Ciaccia of Royal Palm Beach, Stefanie Rae Tucker of North Palm Beach, Caralyn Robinson of Palm Beach Gardens, Jennifer Quinn of Boynton Beach, Deidre Burrs of West Palm Beach, Micah Johnson of West Melbourne, Gunjan Luitel of Lake Worth, Jonetha Curtis of West Palm Beach and Mallory Kirk of Alton, Ill.

This scholarship fund, which to date has assisted 45 students, supports adults going back to college who are displaced workers, working parents, parents returning to the workplace or those currently employed who are trying to move ahead in their careers. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, their potential for future achievement and financial need.

Established in 1989, Catherine T. MacArthur School of Leadership currently serves about 450 adults and non-traditional students. Presently, the school offers the Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management and Master of Science in Leadership degree programs in West Palm Beach, Orlando and Wellington. In addition, the Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management is offered online.

Each MacArthur scholarship is for $1,300 divided between two semesters. Scholarships are offered one time only per student and are nonrenewable.

Scholarship applications are being accepted for the spring semester, which begins Jan. 9. The application deadline is Dec. 13. For information, talk with an admissions counselor at either the West Palm Beach campus, (561) 803-2122, or the Wellington campus, (561) 803-2850.

The MacArthur Foundation supports creative people and effective institutions committed to building a more just, verdant and peaceful world. In addition to selecting the MacArthur Fellows, the Foundation works to defend human rights, advance global conservation and security, make cities better places and understand how technology is affecting children and society.
