Hurricane Ike looks like a puddle in comparison with the storm of activity that Wazoo Weekend brought to the Palm Beach Atlantic University campus.

CityPlace was taken over by PBA college students Friday evening as they jumped and jived to the swing dancing tunes provided by the singing duo Romance.

“I absolutely love swing dancing. I transferred from Northern Michigan and brought my love for swing dancing with me. I’m glad I have an opportunity to share that here at Wazoo Weekend,” said  Junior Ben Laizure.

A lucky group of PBA ladies were able to come on stage and do some background singing, including  Freshman Lauren Williams,  and  Juniors Katelyn Capato and Ashley Anderson.

“I’m a horrible singer, but I had a blast,” said Capato.

Later in the evening, students were able to enter the transformed Harriet Himmel Theater. With an inflatable bounce and joust ring, karaoke, a dressup photo booth, cereal bar and prize balloon drop, the theater radiated a circuslike atmosphere deserving of the name “Wazoo.”

PBA President Dr. David W. Clark was present at the festivities Friday night and said that although it was a little noisy for him, the night was great fun and a great way for students to get to know each other.

“This is the most unity I’ve seen at the beginning of the school year, with so many new students who are serious about their walk with the Lord,” said Clark.

Philosophy Professor Craig Hanson was present for the kickoff of Wazoo Weekend and observed the students celebrating and watching YouTube videos with titles like “Charlie bit my finger."

“This event demonstrates that the maturity level of a five year old and a college student are roughly the same,” said Hanson, jokingly.

Ascent Christ Fellowship Pastor John Poitevent, had a lot to say about the success of the weekend.  He said he helped start Wazoo Weekend as a way to connect with students at the beginning of the year.

“Our hope is that every year it grows bigger and more interesting,” Poitevent said.

PBA Student Body President Adam McKinney said he had a blast manning the dressup photo booth offered by the Student Government Association.

This is a really good way to let students know about Student Government Association.  We will have fun and we are here for them during the school year,” McKinney said

Many students enjoyed the bounce and joust ring where they would stand on separate platforms and try to dethrone their adversary with a large batonlike inflatable weapon.

“It was difficult to accept defeat, but one day I will get over it...someday,” said Junior Ansley James, jokingly.

Saturday was all about intramural sports as students competed in soccer, basketball and were able to float kayaks down the Intracoastal.

“It is good turn out with lots of good athletes. We appreciate the participation this year,” said  Junior and Intramural Supervisor Kelly Lanata.

Wazoo Worship Sunday proved to bring lots of students the opportunity for spiritual growth and enjoyment.

“This is why we are here and what we are about. It is time to spend with God and to see the role God plays in our lives and in this school,” said Director of Residence Life Kevin Abel.

The grand finale of Wazoo Weekend took place Monday as students gathered around the top of the parking garage for a unique outdoor “Prince Caspian” movie event.

Students brought mattresses, blankets and tons of snacks to watch Prince Caspian battle it out under the stars.

“It was wonderful, a real good idea, and I wish they would do more outdoor movies,” said  Sophomore David Fox.
