Philosopher to Deliver Annual Aquinas Lecture on Jan. 24

Dr. James B. South, an associate professor of philosophy at Marquette University and editor of the journal Philosophy & Theology, will speak Jan. 24 during Palm Beach Atlantic University's annual Aquinas Lecture sponsored by the Newman Club. PBA is a private, Christ-centered college in West Palm Beach, Fla., USA.Dr. James B. South, an associate professor of philosophy at Marquette University and editor of the journal Philosophy & Theology, will speak on the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas and his disciple Francisco Suarez in relation to the disembodied soul at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in the DeSantis Family Chapel at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

His scholarship focuses on Renaissance and late medieval philosophy and the philosophical interpretation and understanding of popular culture, including an essay collection on philosophy and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

He has been at Marquette since 1995 and was chair of the philosophy department from 2005 to 2013. He currently is associate dean for faculty in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences at Marquette.

The lecture series commemorates the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), a university professor and Dominican priest who organized the study of theology in the “Summa Theologiae.”
