City Joins University in Celebrating Role of Pharmacists

October 13, 2011

Students in the Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy at Palm Beach Atlantic University are partnering with the City of West Palm Beach to celebrate American Pharmacists Month in October.

American Pharmacists MonthWest Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio signed a proclamation delivered to the city in support of the awareness initiative. American Pharmacist Month recognizes the significant contributions to health care and the commitment to patient care made by pharmacists in all practice settings from around the country.

According to the American Pharmacists Association, there are more than 254,000 licensed pharmacists in the United States providing services to assure the rational and safe use of all medications.

"Know Your MEDICINE, Know Your PHARMACIST" is the theme and core message of the month. To that point, the University’s Gregory School of Pharmacy hosted “Prescription for Health,” an event to assist and educate the community, on Oct. 8 at the Cultural Plaza in downtown Lake Worth. Pharmacy students, pharmacists and healthcare providers provided a variety of free services, including consultations and screenings. The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation provided a $7,000 grant to support the annual health fair.

Palm Beach Atlantic’s School of Pharmacy was established in 2000 and welcomed its first class of 57 students in 2001. The pharmacy education program gained candidate accreditation status in 2002. In 2004, the school was named for Lloyd L. Gregory, patriarch of the Gregory family, in April 2004 and moved into a new building, Gregory Hall. The school graduated its first class April 30, 2005, and today has more than 300 students.
